Privacy Notice
Last updated: 4 October 2026
At Revision Ladder, protecting children's privacy is part of how we have designed the platform.
Revision Ladder is built so that parents hold the account, and children learn through a parent-managed learner profile. We deliberately ask for as little information about children as possible.
We do not ask parents to provide their child's real name, email address, telephone number, home address, date of birth or photograph.
Instead, we ask parents to create an alias or nickname for their learner.
This Privacy Notice explains what information we collect, why we need it, how we use it and the choices available to parents and learners.
A simple explanation for our learners
If you use Revision Ladder as a learner, this is what we want you to know.
Your parent or carer creates and manages your Revision Ladder profile.
We do not need to know your real name.
Please use the nickname or alias your parent has chosen for you and do not enter personal details about yourself into Revision Ladder.
We remember the questions you answer, what you get right, what you find difficult and how your learning is progressing. We do this so Revision Ladder can give you more practice in the areas where you need it.
Questions you find difficult may come back again later so you have another opportunity to practise and understand them.
Your parent or carer can see how you are progressing.
We do not sell your information, and we do not use your learning information to show you adverts.
If you have questions about your information, you can ask your parent or carer to contact us.
Who we are
Revision Ladder is an educational revision and learning platform based in the United Kingdom.
For data protection purposes, the data controller is:
Revision Ladder
Email: admin@revisionladder.co.uk
Information we collect about parents
When a parent creates a Revision Ladder account, we may collect information including their email address, account credentials, subscription information, communications with us and information needed to manage the account.
We use this information to create and secure the account, provide Revision Ladder, communicate about the service, manage subscriptions, provide support and meet our legal obligations.
Passwords are stored securely in hashed form. Revision Ladder never stores passwords in readable plain text.
If you arrive from an advert or link that carries a campaign tag (a utm tag in the web address), we keep that tag in your browser for up to 30 days and save it with your account if you sign up, so we can see which advert brought a family to us. We do not use tracking pixels or advertising trackers.
We also count visits to our public pages (the home page, stage pages, pricing and sign-up) to see which sites send us visitors and which devices are used. This records the page, the site you came from, your device type, browser, operating system and country if known, and a daily code made from your network address and browser that changes every day and cannot be turned back into either. It uses no cookies, never stores your network address, and is not run inside the signed-in app or for browsers that send Do Not Track.
Information about learners
We intentionally minimise the information collected about children.
For a learner profile, we may process:
- the nickname or alias selected by the parent;
- a selected avatar;
- education stage, such as KS1, KS2 or KS3;
- subjects and topics being studied, including any languages a parent chooses;
- questions attempted and answers given;
- scores and assessment results;
- learning progress and areas of strength or difficulty;
- flashcard and practice activity;
- badges, achievements and study progress;
- recommendations generated from learning performance; and
- information included in progress reports shown to the parent.
We ask parents not to use the child's full or real name as their nickname.
We do not ask for a child's personal email address, telephone number, home address, exact date of birth or personal photograph for a child profile.
Why we use learner information
Revision Ladder is designed to do more than record whether an answer was right or wrong.
We use learning activity to understand what the learner appears to know and where they may need further practice.
If a learner gets a question wrong or struggles with a topic, Revision Ladder may bring similar questions or that topic back into later practice, quizzes and revision sessions. This gives the learner further opportunities to practise and improve.
We may also use learning information to adjust the difficulty of questions, recommend appropriate activities, identify areas requiring attention and prepare progress information for the parent.
This personalisation is intended to support the learner's education. It is not used to make legal, financial or similarly significant decisions about a child.
Information parents can see
Parents can see information relating to learner profiles connected to their own account.
This may include the learner's progress, recent learning activity, questions or assessments completed, strengths, areas requiring further practice and reports.
A parent cannot see another family's learner profiles or learning records.
Weekly parent reports
Revision Ladder may provide parents with weekly or periodic progress reports.
These reports help parents understand what their learner has been working on, where they are progressing well and which topics may need further attention.
The reports are intended to help parents support learning both at home and alongside the learner's education at school.
Learning support information
A parent can choose how their learner learns best: how many questions are in a practice round, how often to suggest a break, whether to remove time pressure and competition, whether to read aloud more slowly, and whether to use a calm, low-distraction layout. These are choices about how practice is presented. We do not ask for, or record, any diagnosis, and none of them changes the questions or their difficulty. This is optional, and Revision Ladder works in full without it.
Older profiles may carry a setting that a parent used to tell us their learner is autistic. That is health information, which the law treats as special category data and protects more strongly. We use it for one purpose only: to switch on calm mode. Calm mode removes timers, leaderboards and streaks, stops moving effects and pop-ups, waits for the learner to press a button before anything starts or moves on, explains what will happen next, and reads aloud a little more slowly. Saving a learner's profile replaces that setting with the calm layout choice above.
We rely on the parent's explicit consent to do this. The parent can change or remove any of these choices at any time in the learner's profile, and they are deleted with the learner's profile and included in the data export.
We do not use this information for advertising, we do not include it in reports or emails, and we do not share it with anyone other than the service providers who store our data securely on our behalf.
Our lawful reasons for using information
We use parent account information where this is necessary to provide the service a parent has requested, including creating the account, providing a subscription and managing the service.
For learner information, we rely on our legitimate interests in providing a safe, personalised educational service while protecting the child's interests and rights.
Those interests include helping learners identify knowledge gaps, providing appropriate practice, measuring progress and allowing parents to support their learner.
We minimise children's information because their privacy and best interests take priority when we design and operate the service.
Where we need to process information to comply with UK law, we rely on our legal obligations.
Where consent is required for a particular use, we will ask for it separately and it can be withdrawn.
Automated personalisation
Revision Ladder uses learner performance to help determine which questions, topics or difficulty levels may be most useful next.
For example, if a learner repeatedly struggles with fractions, spelling or a particular topic, the platform may show further practice in that area.
This is educational personalisation, not a decision that has a legal or similarly significant effect on the learner.
Parents can contact us if they have questions about how a learner's practice has been selected.
Artificial intelligence
Some Revision Ladder features may use artificial intelligence to help provide explanations, hints, feedback or learning support.
Where AI services are used, Revision Ladder will aim to provide only the information needed to generate the learning response and will avoid providing the child's real identity.
Where we use AI, the service is provided by Anthropic. Its servers are outside the UK, so what is sent to it is processed outside the UK. Only the question and the answer text a learner has typed are sent, never their nickname or account details, and a written answer is first checked for safeguarding concerns, and is not sent to the AI at all if that check cannot run.
Written answers can contain personal details if a child types them. We ask children not to type names, addresses, school names or other personal details into answers, and parents may like to remind them.
Revision Ladder does not permit an AI provider to use children's learning information for its own advertising or unrelated purposes.
Support and staff access
Authorised Revision Ladder staff may need limited access to learner profiles and learning records where necessary to provide support, investigate a technical issue, check that questions and marking work correctly, address a safeguarding concern, review safety-flagged content, or maintain the service.
Staff access is limited to people who need it for their role.
We do not allow staff to access learner records out of curiosity or for unrelated purposes.
Contacting us
If you contact Revision Ladder, we may collect your name, email address and the information you include in your message.
We use this information to respond to your enquiry, investigate problems and provide support.
Contact-form information may be retained for up to 12 months, unless we need to keep it for longer because of an ongoing complaint, legal requirement or safeguarding matter.
Payments and subscriptions
When a parent purchases a Revision Ladder subscription, a specialist payment provider handles payment information.
Revision Ladder does not store full debit or credit card details itself.
We may retain transaction and subscription records where necessary for account administration and to meet tax, accounting and legal obligations.
Who we share information with
We do not sell children's information.
We do not provide children's learning information to advertisers.
We do not use children's learning records for targeted advertising.
We may use carefully selected service providers to operate Revision Ladder, such as providers of website hosting, database storage, account authentication, email delivery, payment processing, security and, where used, AI learning services.
These providers may process information only for the services they provide to Revision Ladder and under appropriate contractual and security requirements.
We may also disclose information where the law requires us to do so or where this is necessary to protect a child or another person from serious harm.
International transfers
Some technology providers may store or process information outside the United Kingdom.
Where personal information is transferred internationally, we will use an appropriate safeguard required by UK data protection law, such as an adequacy regulation, the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or an approved UK Addendum.
How long we keep information
We keep personal information only for as long as we need it.
Parent account and learner information will normally be kept while the account remains active.
When a parent deletes a learner profile or closes their account, Revision Ladder will delete or anonymise the associated learner information within 30 days, unless we need to retain limited information for legal, security, safeguarding or dispute-resolution purposes.
Payment and financial records may be retained for the period required by applicable tax and accounting laws.
Support messages are normally kept for up to 12 months.
Security
We use appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect information held by Revision Ladder.
These measures include access controls, secure authentication, encryption where appropriate, restricted administrative access, secure hosting and regular review of who can access personal information.
No online system can guarantee absolute security, but Revision Ladder provides particular protection for children's information.
Cookies and similar technology
Revision Ladder may use strictly necessary cookies or local browser storage to operate features such as login, security, accessibility settings, dark mode and user preferences.
We do not use advertising cookies or behavioural advertising trackers.
If Revision Ladder introduces analytics or another type of non-essential cookie in the future, we will update this notice and obtain consent where UK law requires it.
No advertising to children
Revision Ladder does not sell advertising space targeted using children's learning information.
We do not create advertising profiles of children from their Revision Ladder activity.
Children's data protection rights
Children have data protection rights in relation to their own personal information.
Depending on the learner's age and understanding, a parent or carer may exercise those rights on their behalf.
These rights may include access to personal information, correction of inaccurate information, deletion of information, restriction of certain processing, objection to certain uses and, where applicable, receiving a copy of information in a portable format.
Parents can also request deletion of a learner profile through their account where this functionality is available.
To make a data request, contact:
We may need to verify the identity of the parent or account holder before responding.
Complaints
If you have concerns about how Revision Ladder uses personal information, please contact us first at:
You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office.
Information about making a complaint is available from the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Changes to this notice
We may update this Privacy Notice when Revision Ladder changes or when legal requirements change.
Where a change significantly affects how we use personal information, we will take reasonable steps to tell affected account holders.
The date at the top of this notice shows when it was last updated.
Our privacy promise
Revision Ladder was designed around a simple principle: a child should not need to give us their identity for us to help them learn.
Parents hold the account. Learners use an alias. We collect only the information we need to provide and improve the learning experience.
We want learners to practise, make mistakes, and improve without sharing unnecessary personal information.
